CRITERIA FOR THE SELECTION OF MPUMALANGA JUNIOR TENNIS TEAMS FOR PARTICIPATION IN ANY PROVINCIAL TOURNAMENT CRITERIA

  1. A player must be a registered Mpumalanga player, i.e. his/her registration / affiliation fees must be paid via his/her district committee or club.
  2. The ranking list points of players, who will no longer be juniors the next year, are still taken into account.
  3. Players must be available for the full duration of the tournament they have entered for.
  4. A medical certificate must be submitted in case of withdrawal due to injury or illness.
  5. Six tournaments are presented per year. It is compulsory for a player to take part in a minimum of three in order to qualify for invitation to the Masters Tournament.
  6. If a player does not participate in the compulsory three tournaments, he/she will not be invited to the Masters Tournament.
  7. During the year a ranking list will be drawn up for which the points of the best three tournaments will be taken into account for invitation to the Masters Tournament.
  8. The top eight players in each age group will be invited to the Masters Tournament, taking into account the player’s age during the inter-provincial tournament of the following year.
  9. The Masters Tournament is the prestige tournament for Mpumalanga players and will therefore be a compulsory tournament. Only compulsory leader’s camps and school changing camps for grade eight pupils, supported by the schools concerned, as well as medical cases that will be handled on merit, will be accepted as grounds for non-participation. (A medical certificate is no guarantee)
  10. The Masters tournament will be played the weekend before the schools open for the first term of the new school year.
  11. Players who do not participate in the Masters Tournament place themselves at a disadvantage for selection to the provincial teams.
  12. The format of the Masters Tournament will be decided according to the number of participants.
  13. The Masters Tournament serves as a tournament for invited players to improve their ranking points.
  14. After the Masters Tournament the final ranking list will be drawn up for which the points of the best three tournaments as well as the points of the Masters tournament will be calculated. (Thus four tournaments).
  15. If there are players with the same points, the final decision will rest with the committee. Head – to – head results during the year in question may be taken into account.
  16. The SATA rankings will not be taken into consideration for the selection of teams.
  17. Selected players must play a minimum of three representative provincial matches to qualify for Mpumalanga colours.  The final decision regarding awarding of colours rest on the Mpumalanga Executive committee. Player’s behaviour and commitment will also be taken into consideration.
  18.  If a player moves to a higher age group for the following year, 70% of his/her ranking points will be carried over to the following age group.
  19. The committee reserves the right to invite a player for a specific age group for the Masters Tournament with the exclusive aim to select the best team for the specific age group. Players who do not participate in their correct age group will not necessarily be taken into consideration for the older age group when teams are selected.
  20. Management reserves the right to select a player for any age group concerned. The final team selection rests with the committee.
  21. If two age groups are combined during a SATA ranking tournament, points will, for ranking purposes, be awarded in the age group in which he/she entered. The points will be decided according to the final position of all players of the specific age group.

THESE CRITERIA WILL BE STRICTLY ADHERED TO AND NO EXCEPTIONS WILL BE MADE IN THE SELECTION OF THE FINAL TEAMS.

YOUR CHAIRPERSON ANSWERS YOUR QUESTIONS - Sent your questions to ebeng@vodamail.co.za

Question :How could a child that played in the gold class in the 2007 Grand Prix be able to play in the Platinum class?

Answer.

The platinum class or group is the highest in all the classes with gold and then silver to follow. There is no difference between platinum and gold classifications. When there are more than 32 entrees into an age group, the age group is divided into platinum and a gold group. The total of players depends on the total entrees into the tournament and is divided into two groups so that both groups could play better tennis.

The platinum group is first with the rankings and then the gold follows. They are mainly ranked according to the SATA rankings, but in exceptional cases, merit can also be taken into consideration. It is better to let your child play in as many SATA tournaments as possible to have a better ranking and to ensure that he/she would be able to play in the platinum ranking. What is also of importance is the new system for certain junior tournaments. This means the amount of entrees in all Super 7 tournaments as well as the national championships’ entrees are fixed. That means that children who enter in certain tournaments would be entered into two groups.

First group Players that are high on the ranking list and qualify directly for the tournament. Second group Players that are lower on the ranking list, must first play in a qualifying round or two. In this way only a few would then qualify for the main tournament. A player who does not qualify for the main tournament would then play further, but in a separate tournament that is played simultaneously with the main tournament. See also SATA rules on the Mpumalanga tennis web page as well as the SATA / TR3 web page.
